The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
