Boxing is experiencing a real slump this season, with a scarcity of big events and markedly reduced thrilling fights than usual. The anticipation of a important and captivating heavyweight clash between Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the beleaguered business. Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only started boxing when he was 20 years old, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is also on the verge to a world title challenge.

“This is the most important contest, currently, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have stepped up when neither of them had to agree to this match. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and his accomplishments and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the both of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I excel under pressure. Saturday will be no exception. The divide between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a extended duration, with a numerous contests on his ledger. By no means is he an old man but he has been in the game for a long time and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those than me.”
