Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
