Militiamen chuckle as they move on the bed of a transport truck, speeding past a series of nine dead bodies and moving towards the setting Sudanese evening sky.

"Look at such effort. See this mass destruction," one exclaims.

He grins as he points the video equipment on himself and his associate fighters, their Rapid Support Forces identification visible: "They are all going to perish in this manner."

The combatants are exulting in a mass killing that relief organizations suspect killed more than two thousand people in the African city of al-Fashir during October.

A City Isolated from the Globe

After maintaining the city under siege for almost 24 months, from late summer the militia advanced to consolidate its dominance and prevent access for the surviving civilian population.

Satellite images demonstrate that troops started to build a enormous earth barrier - a built-up earthen wall - around the boundaries of el-Fasher, closing roads and blocking relief supplies.
