The gravest potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, ranging from a blistering 4C jump in average temperatures to a two-metre increase in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Predictions
These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but possible. The researchers stated that these scenarios filled a gap in forecasting that had left the UK unprepared for worst-case results.
"The severe weather events we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," said the professor who directed the study. "The UK has been making preparations in the absence of the tools to assess extreme possibilities. We've now given decision-makers what they need to prepare for future conditions they wish to avoid, but dare not dismiss."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Projections
A second set of dire projections sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could rocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be three times typical amounts.
The probability of the extreme scenarios happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to address global heating and how the Earth's systems will react. This research was compared to defence planning or resilience checks for the banking sector.

- 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin dying unleash its enormous store of carbon.
