The East African nation Takes Back Cultural Treasures Following a 100-Year Stay in Germany
Exactly Twelve cultural objects have been officially given back to the Ethiopian nation after being kept by a family in Germany for over a century.
The artefacts, originally acquired in the 1920s by Germany's then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse his partner, were handed over on midweek to the research center at the capital's university.
The collection contained crowns, armor and artistic works, each viewed as culturally valuable in Ethiopia.
"These items continue to represent a symbol of the enduring and friendly ties between the German nation and the Ethiopian people," stated Ferdinand von Weyhe, Germany's envoy to Ethiopia.
Dr. a professor, whose parent was delivered during the family's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, presented the items at a ceremony joined by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He said that the household's intention to restore the treasures was to "showcase their appeal with the audience and safeguard the culture and past linked to my parent's birth."
The artefacts were either presents or acquisitions, as stated by the household.
"I want to thank the Weiss household for concretely demonstrating their sincere appreciation for Ethiopia by carefully safeguarding these artifacts and crucially securing their homecoming to their rightful nation," commented the tourism minister.
She added that the items would soon be made accessible to the people for study and academic study, describing the decision a milestone in safeguarding the nation's cultural heritage.
"Efforts persist to return old items that are found in the custody of collectors and institutions around the globe," the minister stated.
In the era of colonial rule in the African continent, thousands of traditional objects were looted.
This request by African countries for the restoration of taken artefacts has been answered with a degree of progress in lately - though some artefacts are merely on short-term display.
Back in the year 2022, the German government was the first state to repatriate some of the renowned Benin Bronzes to Nigeria in a bid to address its "dark legacy."
