As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
