UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
