What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
