Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to resume conversations as soon as it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks referred to recent comments about providing advanced missiles to Ukraine.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, Dan Fried, commented, "The Russian leader is attempting to disrupt the progress toward increased pressure on the Kremlin." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of achieving a ceasefire by pushing Russia to get serious appear to have diminished."

The situation followed the US president had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Moscow until Thursday's call with the Russian president, which the Kremlin characterized as "highly frank and trustful."

European Fuel Sanctions and Economic Impact

The European Union have established a requirement for energy suppliers into the EU to prove their products are not sourced from Russian oil, as stated in a document released on Thursday. This measure is included in the EU's forthcoming ban on purchases of fuels processed from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial experts observed that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the potential end of Indian imports of Russian oil. Some Indian refiners are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

"This is a positive development for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a big buyer of Russian crude," commented a market analyst, noting that oil prices were stable on Thursday.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and rocket assault hit energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in eight areas. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia deployed numerous of unmanned vehicles and dozens of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use every single day to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that attacks affected the regions of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Diplomatic Responses

Kyiv's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow showed its real approach to peace through the "terror" of such strikes. "The Russian government once again opted for missiles over talks, making this attack into a direct blow to current diplomatic initiatives," she said.

At the same time, the EU's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, stated that the EU had no choice but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "roadmap" to prepare for potential conflict by the end of the decade, featuring a new anti-drone system to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, dubbed the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to start operations in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. Brussels aims to secure the backing of EU leaders at a meeting in the coming days.
